The Art of Seth T. Hahne

Rough draft of

"The Town Ho's Story"

Chapter 54 of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick

This is the rough draft of the first 53 pages of my new graphic novel, The Town-Ho's Story, adapting chapter 54 (and just chapter 54) of Moby-Dick.

My goal in telling this stand-alone story from the book is to break down the barriers a lot of people have, wrongly imagining that the novel is a slog, moments of excitement punctuating Whale Facts The Book—when really, the moments of excitement are nearly the least interesting thing about the book. We often hear the graphic novels can be gateways to reading novels, but in most cases, the graphic novels just replace reading the novel. Because this only replaces a single chapter, I truly hope this project will get people to try out the novel, realizing it's not this serious, somber, melodramatic affair but instead a wild, anarchic, chaotic romp -- a wild man telling a story in the wildest way possible.

.And if you're interested, I currently have a Patreon solely for helping me raise funds for the research I'll need to accurately portray whaling ships and tools (basically I'll need books and a visit or two to maritime museums).
